Hello all,

I am new to setting up game servers and I have a pretty nice rig now so I thought I would give it a try.

My rig consists of:

AMD 3500+ processor
2 gig of PC500 ram from Buffalo
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe (Dual video cards)
X700 PCI-E video card for now as I cant yet afford the dual 7800s
running windows xp pro

I setup a server through BF2 interface as instructed but I cant get past the linksys router. All I can setup is a local area game not a public game.

I have DMZ setup through the router with this PC as the gateway.
I am unsure of how to open ports so be gentle when explaining that subject.

Thanks in advance for your help and reply.

This one is going to be quick because I have to leave for work in a couple minutes but will be back later tonight to follow it up with more detail.

I just want to cover the basics.

1) any PC in the DMZ poses a security threat and that PC should be locked down. I personally only recommend this when trying to see if the problem is the server your router or your internet connection.

2) any server ran from your home with it's limited upload connection (here in the US), you will only be able to have a very limited number of clients (4-6)

3) You will not be able to run a server on one box behind your router and play on another box again behind the same router. All your BF traffic will be pointed towards the server thus your client box (the one you may be playing on) will not receive this traffic.

Now with all that said :D

Ports are listed on page 19 of your manual (hey they listened to us for once). You will need to access your router via it's web interface. Point your browser to 192.168.1.1 This is the default address and also what is know as your gateway.

Once there depending on your model, look for the gaming or forwarding tab. I will post screen shots later tonight when I get home.

Each port will have to be forwarded to the address of the PC running the server.

You will need
port #, type (UDP or TCP) and the address of the game server (all the same)
Make sure you remove your server from the DMZ after you setup your ports. Also you mentioned. Gateway the router is the gateway do not mistake that IP address with the servers IP address.

To find the servers IP address,

From the run command type
cmd
then in the dos window type

ipconfig
This will list your IP address,
subnet mask and gateway

again when I get home I will try and walk you through a little bit more unless someone else can help.

good luck

Thanks not so rude rudedog.

I'll wait for the rest of the information so I can try it.

BTW,

port forwarding has the following fields....

1. Application = UDP or TCP right?

2. Start (this is the one that confuses me.)

3. End (it confuses me because if its only one there is no range.)

4. Protocol = tcp or udp

5. ip address = 192.168.1.?

6. enable = checked or unchecked.

This is what I need the most help with.

still working on what my computers IP address is but will try what you said.

its telling me that my ip address is 192.168.1.100 which is the first computer on the router.

Ok Rudedog,

It works but one port wont fit in.

I left out TCP 28910

not enough space for that

it does work but your right cable connection speed just isnt fast enough to handle it.

I'm lagg free but the others who join have lag.

Guess I wont be hosting a server for friends.

Glad you got it working. I wish we all had connections like the guys over in the Netherlands. Those guys get some outrageous upload speeds.

Normally you can combined ports if they're close. ie start = 21 end= 23 That would forward 21,22,23 to the ip you enter. be careful as you can open other unwanted ports.

Also keep in mind that most of those ports are for gamespy so your server is listed to the public. If it's just you and some close friends, you can give them the public address ( one issued by the cable company listed under status of the router)
