Box should be fine, your biggest worry would be your upload speed.
Typical cable/DSL here in the states will only get you 4-6 players max. Unless you have some type of very vast >Meg upload speed.
The only other thing past that is poking a hole in your firewall router to let the public see your game server.
Good luck

For the money you would better off to get a server with a huge a pipe. I rent from 2 different companies but will not post the names as I think that is against forums rules. The biggest problem you are going to run into is bandwidth, unless you have a truckload od bandwidth, I have a 256 up and and the most I do is 5 people and that stretching it. With RCON4COD it is a cicnh to admin it from too.

Genuine user experience (good and bad) is not normally a problem, so you could name names. Of course we don't want flame wars so keep it factual rather than emotional. We also prefer that "advertising" be posted someplace like the server announcement forum but definitely not spammed across a bunch of forums.
It is a service to the community to get factual feedback on the services available that are relavent to the communtiy (like game server hosting). People who abuse this privilige are dealt with on an individual basis.

By all means recommending a provider in a post is fine. If your a provider we prefer that you post your info in the Server announcement section or if your running a special please post in the submit news section and I will try and get it posted asap.
I would also recommend one of our sponsors if your looking into a GSP for your game server needs.

tyler811 is correct. I've run my own server on a 256MB-up pipe for several years now (MOHAAs, then CoD, then CoD:UO), and I just don't get the players any more. I've got it set to 8 slots, but anything over 5 or 6 is pushing it, regardless of the platform you're running on. This is especially true of CoD2. My original server is a dual-processor 550MHz and it will handle 12-16 players with no problems...on my LAN. I recently acquired, for CoD2, a rented server in Texas with a huge pipe, and had over 500 players just in the last month. So, unless your shop has at least 512MB-up, I wouldn't bother (although it IS fun doing the admin thing!), unless 5-6 players is all you care about.
just a note. if your going to make it dedicated standalone server. cable uses dynamic ip addressing , where the ip is changing from time to time, so you have to tell people when it changes, and reconfigure server setting so gamespy can find your server and list it. everytime ip changes. dsl , does use static ip that dont change , but dsl blows to slows.. hence why servers running is a business and needs a business hook up with static ip's purchased and a slightly higher hookup fee and monthy bill can get kinda spendy. but make sure the business hook up has a good upload speed because alot of them these days are no better than residential speeds using the same modem, only difference is having static ip addresses...note i do own my own gaming server company and learned all this while starting the business.

I think it may depend on where you are, I run a ded linux box in my closet :D and I can get 12 slots real comfortable. I also have cable, which as the previous poster stated it dynamic IP, but my IP has been the same for two years now. Which I understand is typical for my cable company. But, my clanmate, who lives about 5 miles from me, has DSL, his IP is also dynamic, and changes every two days, he uses 3 slots. We also rent 2 servers cod, and cod2, so this is just a hobby, mess with mods, etc. But like the other post said, it is a whole lot of fun. If this is what you want to do you should go for it, it is a satisfying experience. And if you do want to hang with 36 other players, you will need to rent a server. Oh and as far as PC equip, Im only using Athlon xp 2700, which I think is 2.1 ghz, and only 256 mb ram, 8 gb old xbox harddrive. linux server. Runs fine.
