I have been an MOHAA, MOHAAS, COD, and CODUO admin and have a question. I am currently admin on a COD 2 server. I live less than 200 miles from the data center, and my ping on all the other servers is normally 30 to 40. However, on my COD 2 server, my ping is steady around 60, and jumps to 80 or 90 when I pop smoke, or fire a mounted MG (MG42 or 30 cal). Is this an improper setting in my config, or just due to the more graphic intensive nature of the game?
My system is a P4, 2 ghz, nvidia 5700 w/128 meg.
Appreciate any thoughts or comments.

I had a similar question, but it had to do with our server pinging high, but we solved it!!! It was just a couple of days where pings were up for some reason. You may hve you graphics card settings to high drop them a bit...I did that as well and my frame rates settled down a bit, and things have been smooth!!!

Could also depend were your COD2 server is located, Mine is in cal. and I live in Mi. My pings are around 95 on my server. Check to see if your service can switch server locations for you

It sounds like poor coding or a problem within the config. Changing datacenters or locations probably won't help any since you already mentioned you are pretty close to your current location and the other servers run just fine.
COD2 is still for all intents and purposes a new game. I'd hang in there and wait for a patch or two to be released. Hopefully they can address some of the issues folks have.

Its definately a config or game problem. When I ping the server from my machine, I get a 26 ping. However, as soon as I fire up the game, my ping jumps to 60 and higher.

go to www.dslreports.com get into there testing programs and find out how many hops you are making to your server. This should give you some idea as to what could be going on.

Our clan has the same problem. Our servers are in the same ip as they were when running Cod uo. Now with Cod2 the pings are 20-30ms higher.
ASE, HLSW etc shows a ping much lower than it is when playing on servers. And this issue is on every server.

The only real way to start to troubleshoot this problem is to take the network path out of the equation.
I would start with tracert-ing to your server so see if there are any really bad hops
See my old tracert guide here (http://www.fpsadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9006)
Even when your boxes are in the same data center, there could be issues with a switch, cabling or any other infastructure device. The data center could be broken into many different zones utilizing different backbones.
Try tracert first to see if there are any issues, paying close attention to the last couple hops. Larger GSP could be hosting your game servers on different boxes in these different "zones".
Then again it could simply be the game ;)
From what I can tell it's a PC performance issue. COD2 seems to hog resources quite a bit.
To go some way to prove what I mean try this:
When playing online hold down tab and look up at the sky. See if your ping drops. Now while still holding down tab look back down again and your ping will most likely rise up again.
As to how to fix it I'm not sure, other than have a play around with your settings.

go into your in game graphics option and say yes to optimize for sli, most players on my server have had there pings drop in half.
